Description

Trained in sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts, Makimasa Imai approaches clay the way a sculptor approaches stone — breathing movement and life into the material. This all-purpose cup is born from that encounter between the artist's hand, Kyoto clay, and the fire of a wood-burning kiln: at once a sculptural object and an everyday companion.

THE BEAUTY OF CRAZING — 貫入 KANNYU

Look closely at the surface of this cup, and you will notice a delicate web of fine lines running through the glaze. This is not a crack. This is not a defect.

The phenomenon is called crazing (貫入 kannyu in Japanese): when fired at high temperature, the clay body and the glaze contract at slightly different rates. Where they meet, this network of lines emerges — as natural as a fingerprint. The piece is fully solid, watertight, and built to last a lifetime.

育つ器 · A cup that grows with you

In Japanese aesthetics, crazing is known as keshiki — the « landscape » of the piece. Over time, the tea, coffee, or infusion you pour into it will gently stain these fine lines. The glaze develops a patina, the tone deepens, and the cup slowly becomes a faithful record of your daily rituals. The Japanese call this sodatsu utsuwa: a vessel that grows, that matures, through use. It is fully yours — and it will show it.

USAGE & EVERYDAY LIFE

This cup is not made to sit behind glass. It is made to be held every morning.

Pour a green tea at dawn, a black coffee at noon, or a small pour of sake in the evening. Its organic curves — shaped by Imai's sculptural instinct — settle naturally into the palm. Without a handle, it invites you to hold the warmth and slow down: a quiet moment of presence in the flow of the day. The cup suits any drink: water, white wine, herbal tea, or juice. Dishwasher-safe, though hand-washing will preserve its full character.

One-of-a-kind piece. Slight variations in tone and surface are to be expected — they are part of what makes this work entirely your own.
