Description

A universe in the palm — guinomi sake cup in Shigaraki clay

This guinomi — a Japanese sake cup — is the work of Yukitaka Hatsuda, a ceramicist whose entire practice is built on a single, unwavering conviction: never impose a glaze on the clay. Shigaraki, Iga, Echizen, Tamba — he works with the great historic clays of Japan, and lets the fire decide the rest.

This piece is made from Shigaraki clay, one of the oldest and most revered clays in Japan, prized for its generous texture and its particular response to extreme heat. Hatsuda fires it in his anagama pit kiln, located in Kasatori, Kyoto Prefecture, at temperatures exceeding 1,300 °C, over the course of several days. Wood ash, carried by the flames, settles and fuses onto the surface, creating what Japanese tradition calls shizen-yu: a natural glaze born solely from the dialogue among earth, wood, and fire.

On this guinomi, the shizen-yu unfolds a striking palette: from pale blue to deep brown across the outer surface, while the interior reveals a warm scarlet hue — known in Japanese ceramics as hidasuki, the signature of red fire. This contrast between the austere exterior and the luminous interior is one of the most prized qualities of anagama firing.

This guinomi pairs naturally with a tokkuri — the traditional sake flask. It welcomes warm sake and cold sake equally well. But beyond sake, it is equally at home with whisky, natural wine, or simply water. It is an object that grows with its owner: over the years, mineral traces and the marks of use deepen its surface, and each piece becomes, slowly and irreversibly, entirely your own.

■Note regarding parts baked at high temperature
This product was fired in a pit kiln at a temperature exceeding 1300°C. In a pit kiln, the falling ashes melt and take on a pearly appearance, while traces of charring and reddish highlights appear on the surface of the pieces. These color variations are what give wood firing in a pit kiln its unique charm.
Because this item is made from raw, unsifted clay, the clay particles are not uniform in size and contain many small pebbles, which is why water leakage often occurs. Therefore, after being treated to prevent leakage, flower vases are filled with water for about a week after firing, and tea bowls, sake cups, and sake bottles are filled with water for a day and a night to check for leaks. However, it is possible that water leakage may reappear during use. If the leakage persists, please apply instant glue to the exact spot where the leak is located.
