Description

A sculptor turned potter. A cup born of fire.

Makimasa Imai comes from a family of ceramicists with roots three generations deep in Kyoto. And yet, before returning to clay, he spent a decade at the Tokyo University of the Arts studying sculpture — learning the weight of form, the tension of empty space, the honesty of material. That detour was never a departure. It lives in every piece he makes.

The memory of flames

The colour of this cup was not chosen. It was written.

Inside a traditional wood-fired kiln, fire cannot be commanded. It spirals, surges, pauses, and rushes — and in that unpredictable dance, the milky white of Shino ceramic is born, touched here and there by a blush of rose, almost warm to the eye. No pigment, no brush: the fire itself drew this landscape. Every piece is one of a kind. No two will ever be alike.

For the beauty of the everyday

This cup is made for the simple gestures that shape a day. A short coffee at dawn. Green tea on a slow afternoon. A glass of water, always within reach. A sip of sake, some quiet evening.

Its welcoming form, its matte and slightly textured surface, its visual warmth — everything invites you to pick it up and not let go. In time, it will become one of those objects you no longer notice, because it has become part of you.

This is Yō no bi — beauty through use.
