Description

Nature, Shaped by Earth and Fire

These two plates are the work of Makimasa Imai, a Kyoto-based ceramicist from an illustrious three-generation lineage of potters. Son of the legendary master Masayuki Imai — a ceramicist of the highest distinction, awarded Japan's Order of Culture — Makimasa first spent a decade studying sculpture at the Tokyo University of the Arts before returning to Kyoto to embrace the clay. This rare dual formation — contemporary fine arts and ancestral ceramic craft — runs deeply through his vision and his work.

Each plate takes the gentle, asymmetric shape of a lotus leaf. The surface is brought to life by a network of raised lines that seem to ripple like water, or tremble like wind moving through leaves — a delicate evocation of nature's motion, caught forever in ceramic.

Makimasa Imai speaks of his practice as a search to create works in which "the narrative imagined within the material unfolds freely in the mind of the beholder." These plates welcome food and delicacies with quiet elegance, or simply rest as contemplative objects — a fragment of Japanese nature, woven into the rhythm of everyday life.

Presented as a pair, this set makes a naturally refined gift.
