Description

A Kyoto morning, steeped in porcelain. Five bowls that transform a table into art de vivre. Everyday beauty, signed by Ryozo Shibata.

To place these five bowls on a table is to choose a different way of living.
Not ostentatiously — but with that quiet attention to beauty that defines art de vivre, whether French or Japanese.

One bowl for morning miso. Another for evening olives. Or simply arranged in a row on an open shelf, their deep blue conversing with the natural light of the room.

The set of five is no coincidence: it is an invitation to the shared table, to those moments when tableware is no longer an accessory, but the beginning of a conversation.

The blue that adorns these bowls is not printed. It is painted.
Ryozo Shibata prepares his own gosu — a cobalt pigment whose exact shade no machine can replicate. Each line of the pattern is drawn by hand onto raw porcelain, before the glaze seals it forever in the kiln's fire.

It is this ancestral technique — sometsuke, cobalt underglaze — that gives these bowls their particular quality: the almost graphic sharpness of the brushstroke, set against a white of luminous transparency. Not a smooth, cold surface. A living presence that shifts with the angle, the light, the hour of the day.

Each bowl in the set is rigorously identical in its pattern, and yet subtly unique in its soul — as befits any object born from a human hand.

Ryozo Shibata is not just another artisan.
His works have been acquired by the Imperial Household Agency of Japan, the highest distinction that can be bestowed upon a Japanese ceramicist. He has also been invited to lead workshops at Harvard University, where his approach to traditional Japanese ceramics has been recognized as a living heritage of global significance.

To choose these five bowls is to welcome a fragment of that legacy into your home — not as a relic to be protected, but as an object made to be lived with, touched, and loved every day.
